Why Would Giannis Antetokounmpo Want To Leave The Milwaukee Bucks?
The Bucks have failed to advance beyond the conference semifinals every year since hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy in 2021. They were just recently eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in five games, marking the third year in a row of being bounced in the opening round, although Damian Lillard was absent for Game 1 and ended up tearing his Achilles six minutes into Game 4.
Lillard, who is turning 35 years old in July, could end up missing most of next season as he recovers from his catastrophic injury. Fellow teammates Brook Lopez, Taurean Prince, Bobby Portis (player option), Kevin Porter Jr. (player option), and Gary Trent Jr. could all enter free agency, as well, as there's only seven players on Milwaukee currently under contract for next season.
Not having control of its own first-round draft pick until 2031 leaves the organization without much wiggle room to bolster the roster around Antetokounmpo, who has stated on numerous occasions that he wants another ring on his resume. With his No. 2 scorer in Lillard out of commission, the idea of being a part of a team with no legitimate title aspirations in the penultimate year of his contract has likely played a massive part in his reported mindset.
Which Potential Destinations Make The Most Sense For Giannis Antetokounmpo?
Here are three teams the Greek Freak should consider asking for a trade to if that's the decision he ultimately chooses to make.
San Antonio Spurs (+500)
The idea of pairing Antetokounmpo with 7-foot-4 center Victor Wembanyama and newly-acquired point guard De'Aaron Fox should have basketball purists salivating. The defensive upside with the height and wingspan of such a frontcourt could carry San Antonio to a title sooner rather than later, and the draft capital is in place to make an intriguing offer to the Bucks.
A combination of Keldon Johnson, Harrison Barnes, and Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle would make salaries work, and the Spurs just lucked their way into receiving the second overall selection in the draft. The Atlanta Hawks' pick in 2027 and Boston Celtics' pick in 2028 could also be higher than anticipated when the time arrives, so there's enough here to at least put in a call with Milwaukee's front office and get the ball rolling with some serious conversations.
Houston Rockets (+750)
Antetokounmpo has never been confused for an outside marksman, and ideally, the Rockets should want to avoid giving up a Reed Sheppard or even Jalen Green to make a deal a reality. Houston was one of the weaker 3-point shooting teams across the Association, but you have to give up something to get a player the caliber of the former two-time league Most Valuable Player in exchange.
There's not a ton of spacing on the depth chart as is, but Antetokoumpo and the rising star that is Amen Thompson would create a lethal one-two punch defensively, and if the Rockets can keep Alperen Sengun in the middle, that's a three-man combination that's hard to beat. A third team would probably have to get involved here to make salaries work in accordance with the new CBA, but Houston has options and enough that would still be left in place to contend for a championship.
Brooklyn Nets (+1500)
The Western Conference is essentially a death march to the Finals, while the East is fairly open after the No. 1-seeded Cavaliers had a disappointing finish in the second round and the Celtics lost Jayson Tatum to an Achilles injury. There's room for a team like the Nets to make a significant jump in the standings with a player like Antetokounmpo on board, and the nine-time All-Star did say back in February that he would love for European players to lead teams in big markets.
Brooklyn is in possession of a treasure's trove worth of draft capital, including four picks (No. 8, No. 19, No. 26, and No. 27) for the 2025 class alone. As far as talent that can be sent out, however, that's an entirely different story. The pitch here would be that the Nets could give Antetokounmpo his own team with the resources available to provide him another star (roughly $50 million in cap space) to compete alongside in the backdrop of a major city. A title could take some time, though, but the building blocks are here for something special.
